IT TAKES A MISTAKE, BABY

1x is pech, 2x is toeval, 3x is kunst, 4x is niet meer grappig

It takes a mistake, baby is een voorstelling zonder woorden. Ze ontstaat net als Shut Up and Play with Me uit de chemie rond een onderzoeksvraag: Wat hebben een micro-wave, chips en peniciline gemeen? Ze zijn alle drie per toeval ontstaan. Kan het toeval ook een werkmethode zijn? Kunnen we iets verkeerd doen en achteraf besluiten dat het de bedoeling was?

Drie figuren betreden een podium in een séance waarin het misverstand wordt opgeroepen. De één maakt een toevallige beweging. De anderen hechten er meteen betekenis en belang aan. Uit een aaneenschakeling van toevallige gestes en blikken ontstaat een bizarre ceremonie of een ogenschijnlijk oeroud ritueel. Een vallend object wordt behandeld als een boodschap. Verkeerde timing als verraad. Een gedeelde blik als een revolutionaire samenzwering.

Uit te veel toevalligheden waaraan te veel betekenis wordt gehecht, ontstaat een voorstelling ergens tussen choreografie, mislukte vergadering, silent comedy en groepshypnose.

Once is bad luck, twice is coincidence, three times is art, four times is no longer funny.

It Takes a Mistake, Baby is a performance without words. Like Shut Up and Play with Me, it grows out of the chemistry sparked by a simple question: what do the microwave, crisps and penicillin have in common? All three were invented by accident. But can accident itself become a working method? Can we do something wrong and afterwards decide that’s what we meant to do all along?

Three figures enter a stage for a séance in which misunderstanding is summoned. One makes an accidental movement. The others immediately invest it with meaning and importance. From a chain of chance gestures and glances, a bizarre ceremony begins to emerge or what appears to be some ancient ritual. A falling object is treated as a message. Bad timing as betrayal. A shared glance as a revolutionary conspiracy.

Out of too many coincidences given far too much meaning emerges a performance somewhere between choreography, a meeting gone wrong, silent comedy and group hypnosis.

Rake noten en valse beloftes in poverty-pornshow

In Misery’s got talent organiseert een toneeldirecteur een talentenjacht voor arme drommels die denken een gouden stem te hebben. Hij belooft een gigantische geldprijs, maar hoopt zelf natuurlijk ook een slaatje te slaan uit zijn ‘zoo van armen’. Wanneer de kandidaten doorkrijgen dat de directeur liever hun biografie uitmelkt dan hun zangtalent perfectioneert, komen ze in opstand.

Het voltallige ensemble van Het Zuidelijk Toneel zingt de mythes en romantiek rond armoede aan diggelen. Met een stevige knipoog naar het succes van de musical en boxofficehit Les Misérables, verzetten de personages zich tegen de exploitatie van honger en ellende als nobele toestand. Verwacht een voorstelling met rauwe songs, dubieuze zero-to-heroverhalen, rake kritiek en valse noten. Vol gevoel, maar zonder sentiment.

Sharp notes and false promises in a poverty-porn show

In Misery’s Got Talent, a theatre director organises a talent show for poor souls who believe they have a golden voice. He promises a huge cash prize, while naturally hoping to cash in on his own ‘zoo of the poor’. When the contestants realise that the director is more interested in exploiting their life stories than perfecting their singing, they revolt.

The entire ensemble of Het Zuidelijk Toneel sings the myths and romanticism surrounding poverty to pieces. With a hefty wink at the success of the musical and box-office hit Les Misérables, the characters rebel against the exploitation of hunger and hardship as some kind of noble condition. Expect raw songs, dubious zero-to-hero stories, sharp criticism and plenty of off-key notes. Full of feeling, but without the sentimentality.
